Anambra Fire Service Swiftly Contains Blaze at Nwafor Plaza in Awka

The Anambra State Fire Service responded rapidly to a fire incident at Nwafor Plaza, located off Oby Okoli Avenue near UNIZIK Junction – Okpuno road in Awka, on the night of Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

According to an official statement from the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service Headquarters, the emergency call was received at exactly 23:08 hours. Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene and successfully brought the outbreak under control within approximately 51 minutes, concluding operations and withdrawing safely by 23:59 hours.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was triggered by a power surge. Through quick and effective intervention, the blaze was confined to two shops and prevented from spreading to other sections of the multi-tenant commercial building.

No casualties were reported, and the swift action minimized damage to property and ensured the safety of occupants and nearby structures. The Fire Service commended the prompt distress call that enabled early arrival and containment.

In its advisory, the Service urged members of the public to adopt proactive safety measures to prevent similar electrical-related incidents. These include installing surge protectors on appliances and electrical systems, conducting regular inspections of wiring and equipment, and avoiding overloading sockets or using substandard extension cords.

The statement reaffirmed the agency’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property throughout Anambra State through rapid response, public education, and continuous collaboration with communities and other emergency stakeholders.

The incident at Nwafor Plaza highlights the critical importance of functional fire detection systems, quick reporting, and well-equipped emergency services in densely populated commercial areas. Authorities have not released further details on the extent of losses suffered by the affected shop owners, but the contained nature of the fire suggests significant damage was averted.
